"Once I started driving, it felt like they weren't there anymore," she said.
Robinson showed off her superior ball handling, her penetration skills and scored 11 points, but Regis Jesuit, which boasts seven players with offers from Division I colleges, was too much for Mary Louis in a 69-45 victory.
"They sure grow 'em big out in Colorado," Hilltoppers coach Joe Lewinger said with a laugh.
St. John's-bound junior guard Amanda Burakoski scored 12 for Mary Louis, but nine of those came on three consecutive three-pointers in the first five minutes of the game. That's when Regis coach Carl Mattei put his best defender, junior point guard Mariah Williams, on the Hilltoppers' star.
The 5-foot-4 Williams was a pest and got under the 6-foot Burakoski's skin, denying her the ball and forcing her into bad shots, too. Williams, a top-75 national recruit in the Class of 2009 according to hoopgurlz.com, has interest from the University of Colorado and Stanford.
"Amanda is a good player," Mattei said. "She's a heck of a shooter. As far as that team goes, it's on her. With everything running through her, if you can contain her, you can stop the team."
Kelly Puwalski chipped in eight points for Mary Louis, which got as close as 57-44 with 4:34 left in the game. Williams led Regis Jesuit with 13 points and 6-foot-3 junior Diana Rolniak added 12.
"For what it's worth, we showed some promise in the fourth quarter," Lewinger said.
It would have been difficult for the Hilltoppers to defeat last year's Colorado High School Athletic Association's Class 5A state runner-up, especially with senior forward Maral Javadifar out with a torn ACL. But there were positive signs: Robinson showed poise, Puwalski was aggressive and senior center Kelly Carman seems to have improved.
"I think she's going to be able to help us a lot this year," Burakoski said of Robinson.
But this is still Burakoski's show and it doesn't get any easier on Sunday in the National Recruiting Showcase, when Mary Louis plays Notre Dame Academy (Va.), a team scouting services have ranked as high as No. 1 in the country.
"I'm excited," Burakoski said. "I'm actually looking forward to Sunday."
