Kerry O’Connor (Bethpage, NY) knocked down her fifth three-pointer of the night with just :01 remaining to send the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball team to a 60-59 win at Polytechnic on Thursday night. O’Connor finished the night 5-12 from behind the arc and with a career and team-high 15 points against the Fighting Blue Jays.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a three point lead with 15:01 to play in the half when O’Connor knocked down a three to put the Dolphins on top. Mount Saint Vincent would take its biggest lead of the half, at 10-6, with just under 12 minutes remaining on a Ciara Clarke (Warwick, NY) three.
Following Clarke’s three, Polytechnic would reel off 12 straight points to take an 18-10 lead with 6:44 left in the period. The Fighting Blue Jays would expand their lead to nine points with 4:12 remaining on a jump shot from Giovanna Theodule.
From that point the Dolphins would score 14 of the final 18 points of the half, capped by a buzzer beater from Ashley Farrow (Ocean, NJ) to tie the score at 26-26 heading into halftime.
For the half, the Mount shot 9-31 from the field, but knocked down four three pointers. Mount Saint Vincent scored 12 points off of turnovers in the frame and held a 14-4 edge in bench scoring over the first 20:00.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer from Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY) to take a three-point advantage with 19:51 left in regulation. The Dolphins would extend their lead to a game-high 12 points with just under nine minutes remaining on a foul shot from Farrow.
Polytechnic would begin to chip away at the lead until 2:49 remained in the period, when the Fighting Blue Jays tied the score at 52-52 on a jump shot from Kristen Partch. In the final moments of the contest, the score would be tied twice, with Polytechnic holding a three point advantage on two occasions. Polytechnic would take a two point lead with :10 left when Partch knocked down another jumper.
The Dolphins then rushed the ball up the floor and Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, NY) found O’Connor for the game winner. A last attempt at a three pointer from the Blue Jay’s Aranda Consuelo was off the mark and the Dolphins held on for their second straight league win.
Joining O’Connor in double-figures on Thursday were Koerner with 13 points and senior captain Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY) with 11. Percodani posted a game-high eight assists in the game, while Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY) pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Dolphins shot 21-69 from the floor in the contest, including 10-29 from behind the arc. The Mount scored 15 points off of 20 Polytechnic turnovers and held a 24-13 advantage in bench points.
The win moves the Dolphins to 4-2 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. Mount Saint Vincent will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Russell Sage. Tip-Off in Albany is set for 2:00 p.m.
