WESTBURY CAN'T HOLD OFF FREEPORT PDF Print E-mail
In a game where neither team led by more than 5 points, the outcome came down to missed free throws and a questionable call. Freeport's offense featured swing player Nicole Thomas and power forward Breanna Cook, while Westbury's point guard Shemique Hooks and swing Marlene Ricketts were Coach Fanning's go to players. Westbury almost stole the game using a zone press which forced numerous Frereport turnovers. Westbury's undoing would be missed opportunities at the free throw line, especially in the second half. With 3:13 to go in the game, Westbury led 45 - 50 and appeared headed to victory as Freeport struggled with Westbury's pressure. Freeport's Andrea McClain would grab three key rebounds, two of which contributed to  breakaway layups by Nicole Thomas. With 1;47 to go, Freeport had pulled to within one, 45 - 44. Westbury would go the last 3;13 of the game without scoring. Twice they went to the free throw line with an opportunity to extend their one point lead only to come away empty handed. Freeport inbounded the ball with 5.0 on the clock, while Westbury applied full court pressure. As Freeport's Nicole Thomas dribbled up the sideline and apparenty in trouble a whistle was blown. The Westbury fans couldn't believe the call - a foul had been called sending Nicole Thomas to the free throw with 3.2 to go. Thomas sank both, giving Freeport a 45 -44 lead. Westbury's Shemique Hooks desperation shot would fall short.
