JERICHO WEARS HEWLETT DOWN PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday - Dec. 18th: Jericho 17 - 33 - 56 - 70, Hewlett 9 - 25 - 36 - 53. One parent said it best - look at everyone coming out to watch a Jericho game, winning sure does help! Coach Cantwell has steadily rebuilt the program over the last 4 years. Two veteran players, Stacy Stern and Jessie Parr now come off the bench. Jericho opened the game by jumping out to 10 - 2 lead. Hewlett would cut into that lead and close to within 3.  In the last 3 minutes Jericho ran off 7 straight points to go up 17 - 7, only to see Catherine Pastor score at the buzzer. Jericho's stifling defense on Pastor held her scoreless for over 6 minutes. It was obvious what Cantwell wanted her team to do - prevent Pastor from touching the ball and/or make her pass to  her teammates. In the second quarter, Pastor would score half of her teams points, many coming off second effort. Unfortunately, she would miss 4 free throws. Meanwhile, Jericho would get scoring from 7 different players as they maintained their 8 point lead. At times it looked like 4 players were being run at Pastor and many times she found open teammates, who either lost the ball or couldn't finish. Jericho blew open this game in the third quarter, as they held Pastor scoreless until the 3 minute mark while her teammates failed to score off her passes. Five players would score for Jericho, led by Jaclyn Murphy (8 points in the paint) and point guard Marissa Resnick, who was shredding Hewletts defense with crisp passes to open teammates. The 4th qaurter saw Jericho clear their bench and still maintain their lead. Hewlett is obviously built around Pastor but at some time the raw talent of Makisa Francis, Sophie Nelson and Vanessa Pierre has got to start to develop and be able to finish off Pastor's passes. Anna Obed did a commendable job on the boards for Hewlett. If they don't develop it's going to be a long season.  Jericho, a perennial losing team, is going to be right in the thick of their league this year. Coach Cantwell has turned the point over to Sophomore Marissa Resnick, this young lady plays with the confidence of a seasoned veteran. Jaclyn Murphy, who just started playing last year, is going to give opponents trouble in the paint. The supporting cast is rounded out by veterans Parr, Stern, Annette Kiviat (runs the lanes well and can hit the short jumper) and Melissa Checkla (plays like a coach on the floor). Considering where Jericho's girls progam has been lately, their fans are goign to enjoy this season.
