COPIAGUE STYMIES HHH EAST PDF Print E-mail

Thursday - Dec. 20th: Copiague 11 - 29 - 41 - 59, HHH East 10 - 22 - 28 - 39. Copiague playing their second straight game without Ieasia Walker (injured) pulled away from HHH East in the second half utilizing an aggressive zone defense. Copiague went up 9 - 2, holding HHH East scoreless for over 4 minutes. With Copiague's Gabrielle Gibson sitting on the bench (2 fouls), HHH East outscored Copiague 8 - 2 to close out the first quarter. In the second quarter, Copiague's defensive intensity picked up, while at the offensive end Dominique Cunningham and Christina Adu scored 9 points. Copiague looked like they were ready to pull away but forgot about Brittany D'Amato as she nailed two straight threes to pull HHH East to within 23 - 20. In the second half, Copiague increased their defensive pressure as they put one player on D'Amato and became more active in the passing lanes. This defensive intensity would lead to 7 steals in the third quarter and Copiague transitioning up the court quicker. HHH West was held scorelss until the 3:46 mark. Gibson scored 10 of her teams 12 points. The 4th quarter saw Copiague continue their defensve pressure, which lead to HHH East throwing the ball all over the court, HHH East would score just two points over the last 3 minutes. Copiague's Chelsea Williams continues to improve and gain confidence, Dominique Cunningham has been the teams best rebounder and needs to look to score more, keeping defenses honest. Christina Adu gave some very valuable minutes last night, must be become a little more patient at the offensive end.  HHH East D'Amato needs to get the ball quicker - a number of times she had seperated from the defense only to be left standing, waiting for the ball. Lindsay Minor does a nice job handling the ball and should use her size to drive more - especially last night when Gibson picked up her 2nd foul. Copiague's defense has a tendency to reach and without an inside presence, opponents guards can penentrate their zone defense. Widlyn Paul was a force on the boards and at the defensive end had 5 - 6 blocks, while altering many other shots. Offensively, HHH East didn't take advantage of Paul's size against much smaller defenders. Copiague's dilemma will be what happens when Walker returns, will her teammates go back to standing around, waiting for her to do something.
