DEC 27TH: LONG BEACH VS JOHN ADAMS |

Long Beach 20 - 37 - 60 - 77, John Adams 8 - 16 - 23 - 30. Figured I would stop in at the Baldwin Holiday tournament to see what teams were participating and what the matchups were. I walked in at the 4:33 mark of the 1st period with Long Beach already up 10 - 2 against John Adams HS, out of Queens, NY. The first quarters action was very similar to what I saw at the Long Beach - Mepham game. Jasmine Pitts scoring here and there while trying to get her teammates involved at the offensive end. Pitts picked up her 2nd foul late in the quarter and would sit to the midway point of the second quarter. Even with Pitts on the bench, Long Beach was able to extend their lead to 26 - 12. Natasia Hurd would score 8 of her teams 10 points before Pitts would return to the court. When Pitts did return, she proceeded to score the next 10 points for her team, including a basket at the buzzer. Long Beach had opened a 37 - 16 halftime lead. Long Beach's lead would grow to 37 by the end of the third quarter. During the quarter, Long Beach scored at will, with 6 different players scoring. John Adams would go scoreless from the field while their 7 points came from the free throw line. The 4th quater started with Pitts scoring 2 quick baskets and then exited to the bench for the remainder of the game. Long Beach cruised to a 37 point victory. The question I asked after the Mepham game was what would Pitts and her teammates do when they play their crossover games against better and deeper teams. They sort of answered that question in the finals against Baldwin - Pitts will get her 24 - 30 points but her teammates will struggle. They also have to keep Pitts out of foul trouble both in league play and in the crossover games. It was good to see Ashley McFarlan and her dad in the crowd as they were in town visiting.
