DEC 28TH: CENTER MORICHES VS BELLPORT PDF Print E-mail

Center Moriches 14 - 28 - 48 - 68, Bellport 15 - 29 - 40 - 48. Much like the first game, one team would try to get by on their talent while another team hustled after every loose ball and battled on the boards, despite being undersized. Unlike the first game though, the team that hustled would be rewarded with a resoundnig victory. Bellport jumped out to an early lead 7 - 2 and then midway through the period they would grab their largest lead of the game 11 - 4. At the 3:20 mark, Center Moriches Amber Davis picked up her 3rd foul and went to the bench. Bellport was unable to take advantage of the athletic Davis not being in the game, while Centerr Moriches battled back as the quarter came to a close. With Davis on the bench, they outscored Bellport 6 -2 to pull to within 15 - 14. Bellport went 4 for 8 from the free throw line. The second quarter was played pretty evenly as there were 5 ties during the period in the firs 4 minutes. Arielle Nash hit two free throw to put Bellport up 4 with 57 seconds to go. Center Moriches leading scorer Jessica Bandrowski nailed a long distance three at the buzzer to pull Center Moriches to within 29 - 28. In the third quarter, there were five lead changes in the first 4 minutes. On the fifth lead change with 4:48 to go, Center Moriches took the lead on a drivng layup by Bandrowski and never looked back. Bellport resorted to one on one play, and the wind seemed to go out of their sail. Meanwhile, Center Moriches was flying all over the court - out rebounding Bellport, taking advantage of long rebounds and pushing the ball up the court while Bellport players didn't hustle back. The third period belong to Jessica Bandrowski as she scored 12 points. If the third quarter belonged to Bandrowski, then the 4th belonged to Davis as she scored 13 points. Bellport would score 3 points over the last 5 minutes of the game, all from the free throwe line. Bellport was outhuslted by two teams that were smaller and less talented. Bellport's new coach will learn as the season progresses and hopefully his team will use this weekend as a learning tool for the remainder of the season.  If they don't, they are in for a long season in league play. Meanwhile, Center Moriches is a young team with two talented players in Bandrowski and Davis and a bunch a players, who do all the little to help their team win games. Center Moriches gets their leadership from Katie Connelly - a player who won't grab the headlines but will battle on the boards against bigger opponents, and find teammates who are open. Another intangible that Connelly brings is her settling demeanor both on the court and on the huddle.
