DEC 28TH: NEWFIELD VS LINDENHURST PDF Print E-mail
Newfield 18 - 27 - 40 - 55, Lindenhurst 4- 10 - 18 - 26. You cannot compete if you cannot score. Newfield jumped out early in the championship game of their Hoop Dreams Holiday Tournament and never looked back. The closest Lindenhurst got after the jump ball, was on a basket by Krystyna Zajac to tie the score at 2. Newfield would outscore Lindenhurst 16 - 2 over the last 7 minutes to lead 18 - 4. Lindenhurst came out in the second quarter with a little spark in their game, scoring the first two baskets. Newfield called a timeout immediately. Again, Lindenhurst would be held to 2 points over the last 7 minutes of the quarter, while Newfield scored 9 points to lead 27 - 10 at half. In the third quarter, Newfield pounded the ball inside to Linda Periera and Kamala Thompson. Lindenhurst struggle again to score as they went 5 minutes without scoring. In the first 6 minutes of the quarter, Newfield outscored Lindenhurst 14 - 2. Periera and Thompson combined for 12 points. As the 4th quarter started, any fight that was left in Lindenhurst was gone and Newfield just rolled on. Newfield held Lindenhurst to 2 points over the last 4 minutes while they continued to push the tempo. As for Lindenhurst they started out strong last year also, then hit the skids as league play began. Watching the team it looks like the losses are already taking their toll on the players. I can't believe that this is the same team that dominated Amityville in all aspects fo the game earlier in  the seaso. This is all part of the process for a young coach as he tries to implement his system (usually takes 4 years) and how does he handle adversity - especially in front of his players. One suggestion might be using Gumowski down low, alleviating some of the wear and tear on Zajac from the pounding against bigger opponents. As for Newfield they have a solid five along with a couple of players that will help them as the season moves along. It is an experienced group that should be able to compete in their league. They are in with Northport and Commack - it will be interesting to see how they measure up against the two teams. Lindenhurst's Zajac and Kaitlin Vrana were named to the All Tournament team with Newfield's Katelyn Larkin and Kamala Thompson. Jazmine Ducker was named Tournament MVP.
