RECAP OF WEEKS GAMES PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday night caught the Holy Trinity - St. Mary's game. St. Marys's played without Chloe Johnson. Trinity used the size of the court and their length to pressure St. Mary's guards all over the court. Finlay and Green led Trinity offensively. Their team defense impressive at times (held Flynn to one point) still needs to be tightened up, St. Mary's was able to attack the interior of Trinity's zone defense. On Thursday it was off to Calhoun where the young Dalers of Farmingdale were over-matched by the experienced and talented guard play of Vasquez and Fuller. Farmingdale had no answer defensively for Calhoun, while offensively they went almost 15 minutes without scoring. The Dalers either became hesitant to shoot or rushed their shots. Calhoun's starters sat the entire 4th quarter and both Vasuqez and Fuller sat for good stretches in the first  half. After this game it was off to Whitman to watch them play West Islip. This game was close at one point with West Islip trailing 15 - 12. The wheels then came off as Whitman pulled away. Whitman has finally gotten everyone back and is starting to round into shape as individuals and as a team. Meanwhile, West Islip's coach seems to have lost his team and there is plenty of grumbling in the stands from the parents. At one point, the coach pulled all five starters in the third quarter and finished out the game with his bench. Friday night, I went and watched Oceanside play Long Beach. I even got to speak with Rim Rocka, whose daughter plays on Oceanside. He was very prophetic when he mentioned that Oceanside's biggest problem is their inability to score consistently. In the first quarter, they missed too many opportunities allowing Long Beach to hang around. They also went through 2 long stretches where they couldn't score. In the second quarter they struggled, while Long Beach started to pull away and again in the 4th quarter after they had grabbed the lead only to give it right back. Oceanside did a great job in containing Pitts as she "struggled" to score 24 points. They threw every type of imaginable defense at her and to her credit she not only kept her teammates in the game but eventually got her points. On Saturday, I was invited to watch the three way scrimmage between Holy Trinity, Massapequa and Commack. The teams looked sluggish at times - hard to say who did what because after the first 8 minutes one team always had to play back to back, usually struggling in the second session. All the teams probably could've used benches more. Scheduled to catch 8 games this upcoming week. By next Saturday, there will be 20 teams remaining that I have to watch play.
