WFAN MORNING SHOW WITH RICK WOLFE PDF Print E-mail

This morning Rick Wolfe discussed youth sports (ranging from 5/6 year olds to high school ages athletes) and the involvement of parents/coaches.) ** Noise in gymnasiums especially while opponents are shooting free throws. ** Parents not knowing rules of games they are watching and then screaming at officials/umpires. It was recommended that there be stronger leadership by school AD, head coach and chaperones/security guards. ** Parents yelling at the top of their lungs not only at their own child but others as well. He was not talking about cheering or being encouraging. ** A caller suggested that players sit down at the beginning of season as a group with their parents and talk about the comments made by parents and how they can be demoralizing to the player and her teammates. ** A cooling off period where parents cannot talk to a coach - suggested 24 hours to let cooler head prevail. ** Parents sucking up to (befriending) head coach. ** Coaches concern that players are  quitttng sports at young ages - not sure if playing the game for right reason, parents should find best place/level for child to develop at their own pace/ability. ** Coaches running up scores, pressing when up 20 points, keeping star players in game well after outcome has been decided. The argument from the other side was how do you tell 2nd and 3rd string players to not play hard, not to score. Problem that while one team is running up score could lead to retaliation by opponent players, who feel they are being embarassed. ** Controversy of travel teams interfering with high school sports, that they now practice year round. What ever hapopened to 6 day rule - where players are prohibited from going 7 days straight? CYO actually moved high school age season so that it wouldn't conflict with highschool season. Argument is that travel teams fall under no jurisdiction. Players in some states are opting to play for travel teams and not their high school team. They are also transferring to private schools. Show can be heard every Sunday on WFAN between 800am to 900am.
