BCANY Coaches vs. Cancer Efforts-- Just a reminder that all member BCANY coaches are asked to do something, no matter how small, for the Coaches vs. Cancer program. ) Last year, the first time BCANY tried this it was a huge success with nearly $34,000. raised in high school gyms throughout the state. There were also several “big events” (tournaments) that brought the total raised in New York State to near $100,000. This activity is for teams of all levels --modified through varsity! January 27 to February 3, 2008. We need every coach to participate. We are asking every high school basketball coach in New York State to publicly support the Coaches vs. Cancer effort by wearing sneakers to coach in your game(s) the week of January 27 through February 3, 2008. (or a date or week that better fits your programk and scheduleThe plan is simple: We are also asking that you designate one of your home games the week of January 27 through February 3, 2008, and that you pass a container ( or make one available at your ticket counter) for fans to make donations to the Coaches vs. Cancer program. (Checks should be made out to the American Cancer Society.) After the game you simply need to do two things: (1.) email or write Dave Archer to let him know that you participated and how much money was collected, (2.) send a check for amount collected (payable to American Cancer Society) to Dave Archer who will forward it to the Coaches vs. Cancer Office or you can send it directly to your local American Cancer Society Office.Addditional Ideas: Here are some additional ideas that were used among our coaches last year. (1.) 50-50 drawing or raffle at the game, (2.) holding a tournament, (3.) Have a Cancer Survivor honored at the game or speak at the game, (4.) Having informational flyers available at the game, (5) Bake Sale, (6) Half-time Shoot Out, (6.) Putting out a flyer or press release to obtain media publicity for the game. (7.) Honoring or in Memorial for a person who passed away due to Cancer.Include Others: Some of our coaches and schools last season got others involved in their effiorts: (1.) Teacher Dress Down Day, (2.) Hat Day, (3.) Partnering with a club in the school such as a Key Club, (4.) Involving other teams and making it a school wide event, (5.) Having every team in your basketball program involved, (6.) Making it a league-wide activity, So make your plans now and include it in your schedule of games for this season. Do what works for you and your program to help the BCANY Coaches vs. Cancer efforts. We are looking for 100% of all high schools in New York State.
