LAST WEEKS RECAP - Bellport @ Deer Park PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday night Bellport travelled to Deer Park. The game was close through halftime as both teams struggled to score. Despite being undermanned and shorter, Deer Park dominated the boards. In the third quarter, Deer Park was held to one basket, which came at the 3:51 mark. Bellport was able to open a 14 point lead as they got scoring from 5 different players. With 6:15 to go in the 4th, Bellport still lead by 14 and appeared headed to an easy victory. Only problem was someone forgot to tell Deer Park's young team that the game was over. Bellport would do everything possible to give the victory away over the last 6  minutes. Besides throwing the ball away, Bellport shot 3 for 8 at the free throw line. Meanwhile, shots that Deer Park had struggled to make throughout the game now started to fall as Deer Park rallied to within 2 points with 55 seconds remaining. Deer Park would come up short on two opportunities to tie the score. Deer Park played without Megan Stange, Nicole Alvarez and Alison Dzierzynski. Deer Park's roster is comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores. If they can stay healthy and stay in Deer Park, Coach Gennaro's young team can emulate what Kings Park, HHH West and Riverhead have accomplished this season within the next two seasons. Bellport's new coach is in the same predicament as Central Islip, where he has to overcome a program that was left to drop to the bottom of the league. Top player Ikema Ross is no longer on the roster. Bellport's experience and the play of Lushanta Saradel proved to be the difference in this matchup.
