LAST WEEKS RECAP - VSC @ HEMPSTEAD PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, I caught the only game played that night at Hempstead. This was a good matchup despite their records as VSC opened a 18 - 12 lead in the 1st quarter. On the defensive end, VSC opened up sitting in a zone forcing Hempstead to shoot from the outside - Jasmine Linton would oblige by scoring 7 of 8 points from the outside. VSC did an excellent job keeping Faulks away from the basket. At the other end, VSC got whatever they wanted in the lane as they constantly hit open cutters. In the second quarter, VSC switched to man and Darius Faulks immediately took advantage. Atfer being held scoreless in the first quarter, Faulks tallied 10 points. She could have had more but only shot 4 for 9 from the free throw line. VSC was still able to walk off at halftime with a 31 -27 lead, despite being held scoreless for the last 2 minutes and with Renard and Maragh sitting most of the quarter. Hempstead would finally take the lead on Faulk's three pointer with 6:17 to go. This was the only outside she took the entire game. Hempstead started to win the battle on the boards while VSC players tended to stand around. Faulks finished off the 4th quarter with 11 points as she constantly drove to the left. With 1:45 to go, VSC trailed 50 - 49 but they struggled to score down the stretch. Hempstead outscored VSC -9 - 3, hitting 5 of 7 free throws. Hempstead played this game without Crystal Lofton, so not only did Faulks have to step up but so did teammate Jasmine Linton. Two questions for VSC are why did they switch out of the zone defense and at what point were they going to push Faulks to her right. During the game she attempted one outside shot and only went right once.
