Thursday it was off to Elmont as they preprared to play Calhoun in front of a packed gymnasium. The pace of the game started out like a sprint as both teams looked to push the ball up the court. Calhoun trailed 13 - 10 at the end of the 1st quarter but could have trailed by more as Elmont missed many opportunities in the lane. To Calhoun's credit they were able to weather Elmont's constant pressure and actually appeared to be less winded than Elmont. The pace of the game settled down in the second quarter but defensively play became ragged. Both teams would go the free throw line 4 times each. Calhoun was able to grab a 23 - 20 lead despite hitting only 4 of 7 free throws. Elmont struggled from the floor scoring twice while only hitting 4 of 8 free throws. If you think Elmont struggled in the second quarter it was no better in the third. Calhoun's defense held them to just 3 baskets and scoreless for the last 5 minutes. In the 4th quarter, Elmont appeared to get a second wind as they held Calhoun to one basket over the first 5 minutes of the quarter. With two minutes left, Elmont closed to within36 - 34. Calhoun would settle down to hold off Elmont. Over the last two minutes only Calhoun was able to score from the floor. The game would be decided at the foul line as Calhoun hit 4 of 6 free throws in the last minute to seal the win. After closing to within 2, Elmont would score three points at the free throw line. Calhoun's Megan Vasquez and Elmont's Toni-Ann Lawrence were outstanding, as the coaching staff of Stony Brook looked on. Calhoun is going to need better production from Vasquez's teammates if they plan on getting to Nassau County AA finals. As for Elmont, they have got to do a better job of finishing in the paint, shooting free thorws and clock management. In the last 3 minutes, they seem to take 20 seconds or more each possession to get the ball across half court.
