LAST WEEKS RECAP - COMMACK @ NORTHPORT PDF Print E-mail
What a better way to spend a quiet Saturday afternoon? Take a drive up to Northport country to watch one of the most heated and intense rivalries on Long Island (and that rivalry takes place in the stands). So much for a quiet Saturday as the crowd was not only overflowing but noisy. Well, it was noisy on one side. The game started out a little sloppy as the players were feeding off the energy in the building. Once the players settled in Commack opened a 13 - 6 lead, Northport would close to within 14 - 10 only to see Commack score 4 points in the last minute. Both sides were not happy with the refereeing and would complain throughout the game. Some of the "dislike" started to spill over onto the court as players got in little shoves after whistles were blown. You had to like the atmospshere though - people were still in coming into the gym midway through the half. There were even some Northport fans sitting on the visitors side. Some coaches brought their entire teams. In the second quarter, there was more of a flow to the game even as shots and rebounds were heavily contested. Commack was feeling it late into the half, when Northport inserted some size (Amanda Bender and  Stephanie Leon) onto the court, which seemed to give Commack some problems. Commack, up by 36 - 19, saw Nortphort respond with 9  points in the last minute to close the deficit to 36- 28. Following the lead of Prahalis, Commack's defense went to another level as Northport struggled to score in the 3rd quarter. Northport was held to 4 points in the last 4 minutes. Meanwhile Commack opened a 61 - 39 lead. In the 4th quarter, the outcome was a mere formality as Commack lead 74 - 45 with 4:16 to. Northport's bench would outscore Commack 13 - 0 over the last 3 minutes to make the score a little bit more respectable. Northport, which will return most of their lineup next season, still struggles at the guard position. They were exposed last year in the platyoffs against Copiague and again yesterday. As for Commack the question is how far can Sammy take her team? Putting aside all the theatrics games like Sautrday are good for Long Island basketball. Oh yeah if you want to stop the antics then just do what North Babylon did last year - beat Commack.
