Waterbury, Ct. (Nov. 20, 2007) – Freshman Lauren Caggiano (Holtsville, NY) recorded her first double-double, setting career highs of 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead the NYIT women’s basketball team over Post University 71-61 tonight in non-conference action. The victory improves the Bears to 1-1 on the season while Post falls to 0-2.
Post jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and 12-10 with seven minutes gone by before the Bears used a 10-2 run, started by a three point play from senior Nicole Matthews (Brooklyn, NY), to build a 20-14 lead with 9:49 remaining. Post responded with an 8-2 run of their own over the next two minutes to knot the score at 20-20, but Caggiano’s layup started a string of nine consecutive points to give NYIT a 31-22 lead with just under five minutes left. Post would not go away though as they scored six straight to cut the Bears lead to three. Sophomore Madison Robertson’s (Shirley, NY) layup at the buzzer pushed the Bears lead back to five, 35-30, at the half.
NYIT opened the second half by scoring the first five points to build their largest lead of the game 40-30. Post would eventually cut that lead down to three points, 47-44 with 11:49 remaining, but eight straight points from freshman Sarah Vivonetto (Manorville, NY), including two three pointers, propelled the Bears to an 59-48 lead at the 7:49 mark. Post would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Senior Emilly Bolling (Palmer, Alaska) added 14 points in the win, while senior Brittany Smith (Hempstead, NY) chipped in with 11 and Vivonetto finished with 10 points.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28 as they travel to neighboring C.W. Post for an East Coast Conference match at 5 p.m.
