I attended the New Hyde Park versus Floral Park game on 1/6/08. New Hyde Park seemed to be on a roll having defeated Elmont by 2 points, Malverne by 1 point and South Side by 1 point. The Malverne and South Side Victories were suspect because of a missing Alisha Steele and limited action by the Lonergan Sisters. New Hyde Park was in their first year of being in Conference ABC 1 and wanting to show they belonged. Floral Park had fallen to Glenn and Roosevelet both by 7 points in close games. Floral Park was looking for their first conference victory after losing to their rival Roosevelt to open conference play. This game would be a good measuring stick for both teams. Both teams were looking to make a statement to the rest of the Conference. The first quarter started with Floral Park struggling offensively. Floral Park scored 3 points all by Shannon Ingram in the first quarter. It looked like Floral Park could not do anything right. That was the last quarter that Floral Park lost. The second quarter opened with Floral Park pressing and playing tough defense. New Hyde Park responded with Meaghan McCullagh and Nicole Daly keeping it close. Floral Park was lead by Shannon Ingram and Ericka Re in the second quarter. Floral Park was out working New Hyde Park on the boards and limiting them to one shot on offense. At half time the score was Floral Park 22 and New Hyde Park 18. The keys to victory for New Hyde Park was keeping Floral Park off the boards and limiting penetration in the paint. New Hyde Park needed to come out pressing to shake Floral Park up. Most of Floral Park's points came from their front court but their back court could get hot if not defended closely. Floral Park had to ensure they continued to pound the boards and going inside. Going inside would open the outside shot for Ericka Re and Caitlin Klaum. New Hyde Park was getting most of their offense in the front court and needed to get more scoring from their back court. The question was who would step up for New Hyde Park and be the X factor? The third quarter started with New Hyde Park pressing and Floral Park doing the same. Floral Park was able to break the press and continued to go inside and out rebound New Hyde Park. New Hyde Park's Meaghan McCullagh continued to put points on the board. By the end of the third quarter the game had been decided. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter was Floral Park 40 and New Hyde Park 28. The final quarter was a formality with Floral Park winning 8 to 6. The final score of the game was Floral Park 48 to New Hyde Park 34. The high scorers for New Hyde Park were Meaghan McCullagh 12 points, Nicole Daly 7 points and Ciara McCullagh 6 points. The high scorers for Floral park were Shannon Ingram 24 points and 25 rebounds (new school record), Ericka Re 10 points and Caitlin Klaum 7 points. It was a good game but it is early in the season and both of these teams will be tough in the post season. Floral Park stood at 1-1 and New Hyde Park 2-1 in conference play after the dust cleared.
